Our Editing

Detailed? Yes. Brutal? Absolutely not.

When we edit your project, you’re likely to get a lot of edits back.

Why? Because we’re not lazy. We call out every opportunity we see to make your writing better. And we also point out

your natural talents and strengths.

You might not even be aware of them…and we want you to be able to make the most of them!

We want to leave you feeling excited about making your writing the best it can be.

We have years of book editing and book acquiring experience in the publishing industry. And we charge less than the EFA (Editorial Freelancers Association) rates.

Because you need to know exactly how much you’re spending, we charge by the word, not by the hour. Descriptions of types of editing, with prices, are below.

Note: we edit from Word documents only, and we have a minimum of $50 for all editing and proofreading jobs regardless of word count..

Developmental Editing Rates

.015/word (example: 50,000 words = $750)

Developmental edits are also known as content edits or story edits. At a publishing house, this is the first round of edits, focusing on plotting, pacing, character development, character motivation, rising conflict, issues of logic and continuity, and all the things that make a great story. (You can read more about this in Bryn’s post, “What Is Developmental Editing?”) For nonfiction, developmental edits focus on structure, clarity, authenticity, voice, and connecting with the reader.

Copy Editing Rates

.016/word (example: 50,000 words = $800)

Copy edits are sometimes called line edits. They’re usually the second or third round of edits, done after the story itself is in great shape, and they focus on polishing the writing style.

Copy editing involves much more than grammar, word choice, spelling, punctuation, and usage. It also includes varying sentence structure, correcting awkward or unclear passages, calling out unnecessary repetition of words and ideas, making sure one idea flows into the next, and more. Like most traditional publishing houses, we use The Chicago Manual of Style for copy edits.

“The Works” Editing Rates

This is a comprehensive editing pass that includes developmental edits plus thorough copy edits.

Proofreading Rates

.006/word (example: 50,000 words = $300)

With our proofreading services, we correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation. We can proofread a Word document or a formatted book file, such as an epub or PDF file; if we’re doing the latter, we’ll also note any formatting issues, and you’ll receive your proofreading changes as a separate Word document. In addition to books, we also proofread white papers, corporate presentation decks, and website content.
